On October 10th, your Kansas State Chapter Membership Committee M&Ms were pleased to welcome 55 sisters from around the state to share ideas and strengthen their membership superpowers! It was an honor to welcome Laura Parris, chair of the P.E.O. International Membership Committee, to share ideas with us as well.
We chatted about strategies for meeting Kansas State Chapter goals this year, completed a review of the reinstatement process for sisters returning to their home chapters and for sisters transferring via reinstatement, and explored the role of the local chapter membership committee, including how to start a membership committee for your own chapter.
We hope all in attendance learned some new techniques and left feeling empowered to tackle those P.E.O. membership goals! A big thank you to all who attended. If you have any membership concerns or questions, please reach out to the KSC Membership Committee at kscpeomembership@gmail.com. We’re here to help!
When sisters reach 50 years of membership, they are celebrated as Golden Girls in their local chapters and at a luncheon at the Convention of Kansas State Chapter. Their pictures are also posted on the P.E.O. Kansas Facebook page to mark this milestone. But what about sisters who have been in P.E.O. for 60 or more years?
Kansas State Chapter celebrates all of you reaching the milestone of 60+ years in P.E.O.! It is quite an accomplishment to be a long-time member of this wonderful sisterhood. You have seen a lot of changes in P.E.O. and have a multitude of stories to share. We hope you will be willing to share some of the stories with your chapter sisters and with all of us.
Happy anniversary and we celebrate YOU.
Click on the link below for a list of sisters who have been members for 60+ years. Please ask them to tell their P.E.O story and share it with Kansas State Chapter.
Did you see the new unaffiliate postcards that are available for your chapter to send to new sisters in your area? A few were included in your winter mailing. If you have used them already, and need more, they are available on ourpeokansas.org website.
These postcards are an easy way to reach out to new sisters in your area when you learn about one through an unaffiliate list sent or by a Notice of a Member In Your Area. Try one today! The sister you receive into your chapter will definitely be another jewel in our sisterhood!
Kansas State Chapter is holding a new sister social to help unaffiliates, Cottey graduates and others in the Kansas City area who may be interested in hearing about starting a new chapter and/or looking for a new home chapter.
Do you know someone who might enjoy this event? Please contact the KSC Membership Committee (KSCPEOMembership@gmail.com) and let them know. Click on the invitation below for more information.
Have you been asked what P.E.O. stands for by your family? Have you wondered what to say without giving the real meaning of our letters? Our mission statement says it all.
Try to memorize it so you will know what to say the next time someone asks you what it means.
Mission Statement P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
What are your favorite childhood Valentine memories? Mine involve making Valentine bags to collect cards at my elementary school parties and also helping my girls make cards for their friends and their boxes to collect the cards they received. It always felt like such a big deal and my kids got so excited!
Now compare those to what the TV commercials and stores make us think Valentine’s Day is about: giant flower arrangements, diamond jewelry, and dramatic demonstrations of love.
Only one of those versions allows you to include all the people you love in your Valentine’s Day, not just your spouse or significant other. But our ability to love isn’t limited to romantic relationships. We know that from our own experiences. And we know that from the way we see our P.E.O. sisters show their love for each other through the simplest acts of sisterly love.
In a world that seems to be hurting for love, let’s take the opportunity we are given to celebrate all of the people we care about on Valentine’s Day—our spouses, (grand)kids, friends, and family, which includes our P.E.O. sisters.
Did you know that in the Instructions to Officers of Local Chapters (IOLC page 4 of President’s instructions) the president of a chapter is instructed to ask the corresponding secretary to read the names of chapter inactive members to the chapter around the time of annual reports? Why would we do this, you ask?
The reading of the names of our sisters who have gone inactive helps to verify their contact information and to remind all sisters of these women whose circumstances precipitated this membership status change and to reflect on that sister.
Perhaps the inactive sister’s circumstances have changed and she might welcome the opportunity to reinstate. Perhaps the inactive sister has moved and would maybe like to reinstate to a chapter closer to her new home to meet new women in her area.
Just a reminder that we should maintain contact with all P.E.O. sisters. Each sister is a VIP – A Very Important P.E.O.
When you hear that word, what do you think? Do you say “Oh, no! Only 25 days to Christmas and I haven’t begun to shop!” or “I have to put up my Christmas decorations, plan a Christmas party, go to Christmas parties, make food for Christmas parties!” or “I can’t wait to spend some quality time with my family and friends!”?
No matter how you feel in the month of December, you have been challenged.
You and your chapter are challenged to have a big attendance at your December meeting. This meeting can be whatever you want to do. Holiday season is a great way to get together and just share the joy of P.E.O. with each other. You can wear Christmas sweaters (ugly or not), sing Christmas carols, eat yummy food, have a gift exchange, play some holiday games or just visit around a cozy room and enjoy your sisters. Whatever you have planned, get the word out to all the sisters who have been missing as well as to the ones who come regularly to come to the December meeting.
You have been challenged! Will you accept the challenge?
ALWAYS TALK P.E.O. TO EVERYONE: LIVE P.E.O. TALK P.E.O. IT’S CONTAGIOUS!
WHO DO WE ASK? WHO NEEDS TO HEAR OUR STORY? SHARE YOUR P.E.O. LIFE STORY AND BE PREPARED TO TALK ABOUT OUR MISSION Neighbors/friends Colleague at work-co-workers Have your elevator speech ready with who we are and what is our purpose STAR recipient and or their mom and sister At your chapter’s public fundraiser Church choir All women in your family University students in your town Person who does a program at your chapter meeting (if not currently a sister)
HOW DO WE INVOLVE OUR SISTERS? Do you need to change the time of your meeting? Do you need to provide daycare? Should you set up buddy groups to attend meetings? Could 3-4 sisters text each other and pick each other up or offer a ride to those not able to drive? Be ready to set up Zoom options for travelers or snowbirds. If your chapter has a lot of younger women with children, hold virtual-only meetings and spend regular meeting times during the month in social.
GIVE SISTERS GRACE WHEN THEY CAN NOT ATTEND
WAYS TO CARE FOR SISTERS AND BE TOGETHER Host a movie night or book club. Play mah jongg: Have lunch then play. Have a 5th Friday lunch bunch. Cycling group–maybe cycle with another chapter. “Adopt” a young mother and care for them on a consistent basis. Meet at a retirement center where sisters live. Post an “I spy” to point out someone you see in the community doing things. Go to a bakery or coffee house quarterly to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Start small group lunches: Draw 4-5 names at the meeting to be in each small group. Name groups by the virtues. Secret sister Adopt a Christmas tree in your town to decorate together. Local service project like a food pantry During roll call have a question for sisters to answer, for example, would you rather be on a boat or in a camper? After roll call, have treasurer write on sticky note names missing. put sticky notes at door and ask someone to pick one and call the missing sister or send a note.
CHALLENGES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: Age of chapter, closed group, old fashioned, unable to drive and attend: o Try regular pop-ups to go to lunch. o Winery tour, movies, book club etc. o Set up car pools. o Meet at a senior center Consistently use unaffiliate list and contact those locally. One chapter in Wichita increased membership by three in two years using the unaffiliates list.
GET TO KNOW YOUR SISTER PROGRAMS: Have everyone send a picture of their front door to one person, then during program guess whose it is. Brown bag: Have each member put three items about themself in a brown bag, then guess who it is. Make a floral gift for a member unable to attend. Look at unaffiliate list to see if there are women close to you. There are 600 unaffiliates and what would happen if 10% of them were active again? Have each officer be in charge of a small group of sisters.
PRINT BUSINESS CARDS FOR MEMBERS TO HAND OUT TO POTENTIAL MEMBERS Anne Clark of Wichita shared these with us. They were 250 for $36 at Adesas printing Wichita. If someone is interested, reach out to Anne at aws1155@yahoo.com to get permission from the printer. She got the idea from the Record.
WE ARE ALL SO MUCH ALIKE AND HAVE SO MUCH IN COMMON. SHARING THAT GIFT WITH OTHERS IS PRICELESS
